Storyfeather Gazette: Ghastly things lurk in a warlock's abandoned tower, a house where a young wife mysteriously perished, and a communal laundry room

October 2025 Issue 1

In this issue: Short stories and podcast episodes from the first half of October, and appreciation for a common household spider.

WHEN YOUR OWN HOME IS SPOOKY 🕷

(Arachnophobes might want to skip ahead.)

We have cellar spiders where I live, sometimes called daddy long-legs. I've seen them do amazing things. I watched one rappel down the side of my bathroom wall, suddenly slip, swing a little, quickly steady itself, and continue down. I don't know anything about climbing, but I wondered if the spider had a second dragline it used to stop itself from swinging helplessly back and forth. 🤔

Recently, I noticed what looked like a small ball of lint hovering in the corner of my bedroom. I had to get real close before I saw the cellar spider attached to the ball. It wasn't lint. It was another bigger spider, spun up neatly in layers of webbing, unmoving. As I returned throughout the day, I saw the cellar spider perched around its package in different positions, sucking the juices out of its captured prey. "Rest in peace" to that other spider. ⚰️

This week's stories don't contain any jump scares or gore. But I do hope you're in the mood for something eerie, spooky, cold, and sad. (Or the one story about a huge spider-like creature.)

I did see the clock with my own eyes once. I looked up at the weird fat twisting curves. Up and up to the crown of angled sections, and the scratches in the middle section that almost looked like a face. A face looking back down at me. It made me feel heavy inside.
Was that the weight of the curse?
Or the weight of his gaze?
There was no pendulum. But I heard a ticking. Even in a room crowded with mourners murmuring.
The ticking of grandfather’s clock.
