April 2026 Issue 2

In this issue: An appreciation of the everyday fairy, and short stories & podcast episodes from the second half of April.

HAIL TO THE HOUSEHOLD FAIRY 🏠

What is that sparkle in your cat's emerald eye? Who is that sweet little lizard sunning himself in your yard? Is that spider in the corner spinning a spectacular shield against harmful spirits that might enter your home?

In many stories, fairies are either tall solemn sovereigns, or tiny petty pranksters. Is there any in-between? Whose stories are more fun to tell? Let's see. πŸ€“

πŸͺ²

Small as a spider. Sharp as a sting. Hot as a match-flame.

The fae on gossamer wing.

They were not the smallest of the fairies, for those could be perceived only by microscopes imbued with the powers of both electricity and enchantment. And they were not the most beloved of the fairies, for they took on the aspects of creatures that humans often feared and abhorred, despite the typical human attraction to tiny things.

These fairies appeared like the flying insects. Moth, butterfly, honeybee, beetle. Dipterous, coleopterous, hymenopterous, lepidopterous...if they were winged, they were classified as the aerofaere.

Attention Fiction Writers βœ’οΈ

I have another newsletter, one for fictioneers. Every month, I pick a topic or theme to cover. I send out a short weekly email to introduce the topic, cover a technique, talk troubleshooting, then use one of my stories to demonstrate some aspect of the topic. If you're a Gazette subscriber, you can get the fiction-writing newsletter by simply pressing the title here: Fictioneer's Field Guide.

Parting wordsπŸͺΆ
